Overview of The Puppy Purchasing Process:
1. The Decision
After you've submitted your Puppy Application, we'll give you a call. Together we'll decide if a Spanish Water Dog is a good fit for you. Because of their high intelligence and their need for physical activity and social interaction, not everyone is ready to embrace this breed. But if you understand what they need from you and also value their loyalty, affection, playful nature, gorgeous woolly coat, and adoring gaze—then together we’ll move forward to explore the possibilities. We can schedule a visit if you’d like to come meet the parents and play with the puppies if they are older that 6 weeks when they have their first vet check and set of immunizations. You can ask us a gazillion questions. See our FAQ page to read some questions that we have been often asked.
2. The Deposit
This is a rare and valuable breed. The cost of each puppy is a total of $2,500. If you’re ready to commit to a puppy, we’ll email you a PayPal invoice to use when paying a non-refundable deposit of $500. You can use either PayPal, a debit card, or a credit card to pay the invoice with a click. The deposit is non-refundable in order to make sure that only people who are truly serious commit to a puppy.
3. The Selection Process
Once you’ve sent your deposit, you will be placed in line to select your puppy. Puppies are chosen in the order that deposits are received when the puppies are 4 weeks old. As soon as puppies are born, I will post a steady stream of photos and videos on our Facebook page so that you can watch them develop. I’ll also provide a modified Vollard Personality Test of each puppy so that you can base your decision on more than gender and coat color. Their full personality won’t completely emerge until 7 weeks of age, but that’s far too close to their release date at 8 weeks old. However, at 4 weeks old we can still get a good glimpse of their temperament and personality.
If for some reason, there’s not a puppy of your choosing when it’s your turn to make a selection, you can transfer your deposit to the next litter. We usually have 2 litters per year, so you won’t have too long to wait, and you just might be first or second in line for that future litter.
3. The Training
While your pup is growing, we'll start her socialization training to make sure that she is ready to take on the outside world. We lovingly handle her from birth onward. This will make sure that she is not excessively shy around new people, especially children. Around 10 weeks of age we’ll start focusing on house training. That’s approximately the time that she begins to better control her bladder and bowels.
4. The Final Vet Check
Right before you come to get your puppy, we’ll bring him to our vet for a complete check up. The vet will fill out an official CVI (Certificate of Veterinary Inspection). This document lists his name, age, vaccinations, and guarantees that he is not showing any signs of infectious or contagious disease. It says that he is fit for travel. Be sure to schedule a vet appointment within 3 days of your arrival home to verify that your puppy is healthy at the time of transfer from our home to yours.
5. The Balance Payment
When it’s almost time for you to take your pup home, we’ll send you a second invoice for your balance of $2,000. This final payment will be made after you have your puppy in your arms in our home. Your balance needs to be paid in cash. We sincerely apologize for this inconvenience to you, but we have recently encountered some unscrupulous people. Sigh.
6. The Pick-up
Together we'll decide on a schedule for you to pick up your puppy after she is at least 8 weeks old. Make sure that you have all the items on the initial supply list that we will send you. Especially be sure to have a collar, leash, and an ID tag with you when you come for your pup. We recommend that you have a crate waiting at home for your puppy’s first night, especially if she is not yet fully house trained. We will provide you with:
your puppy’s official UKC registration papers with a 3 generation pedigree.
a few days supply of our puppy chow (Royal Canin Puppy Medium),
a Sales Agreement with our health guarantee,
the Certificate of Veterinary Inspection,
a record of deworming treatments,
an immunization record, and
a few familiar soft toys to comfort and entertain your puppy during transit.
